Gift a Gruffalo at WHSmith this summer

Head to WHSmith this summer to help bring the joy of reading to more children who don’t have a book of their own.

WHSmith, the National Literacy Trust and Macmillan Children’s Books have teamed up to mark the 25th anniversary of The Gruffalo by getting more children reading.

You can be part of this story too.

Reading and sharing stories with young children, and as they grow up, builds their language and communication skills from the very start and is crucial for their development and future life chances. But recent National Literacy Trust research shows that one in five young children don’t have a single book of their own at home.

For every copy of a Gruffalo book bought from WHSmith this summer (between 23 May to 5 September 2024), WHSmith, Macmillan Children’s Books and the National Literacy Trust will gift a copy of The Gruffalo, written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, to a young child from a disadvantaged community.

The gifted copies of The Gruffalo will be distributed to children and families through the National Literacy Trust’s ‘literacy hubs’, where the charity works alongside some of the most deprived communities in the UK to tackle low levels of literacy.

Pop along to WHSmith to buy The Gruffalo book or donate in store at the till or online today and be part of changing life stories across the UK.

Your donation will help the National Literacy Trust to continue its vital work with communities, schools and local partners to fund resources, including free books for young children who are unlikely to own one, and interventions to help improve their reading skills and, ultimately, their futures.
