How to win at Christmas gifting

Open Today

Nothing makes us panic buy quite like the countdown to the festive season, but fear not, there’s a perfect pressie waiting for each of the tricky-to-buy-for friends and relations on your seemingly endless Christmas shopping list…

The other half:

Sometimes the person you know best is the hardest person to buy for, why is that? The best solution, unless you have been taking thoughtful notes throughout the year, is a new outfit from M&S, Next or H&M or a scent from Boots. The result – a dapper other half and heaps of brownie points for yourself. You’re welcome.

The far-flung relation:

You don’t know their taste, rarely see them, and socks seem like such a cliché. The best thing for this person is definitely a bottle of something festive from M&S. If you don’t know your Baileys from your Bordeaux then ask the in-store experts for guidance, and if you know for a fact that they don’t drink, a delicious bottle of non-alcoholic punch is equally as thoughtful.

The beauty obsessive:

This person already has every product recommended by beauty bloggers and wouldn’t dream about being seen in public without a contour. To wow them with a gift, it’s got to produce selfie-worthy results, and also have serious dressing-table appeal. A beauty advent calendar from Boots will keep them on their (perfectly manicured) toes. Containing a new product for every day in December, this will keep them busy beautifying right through party season and beyond. Take note though, this can’t wait for the tree, it’ll need to be gifted a little early!

The kid:

Despite the fact that Santa is a very busy man and seems to have the whole ‘present giving’ thing in hand, even he may need a little now and again. If the elves are overworked in your area, a nip to Argos, ToysRUs or Smyths will usually do the trick. If you need more guidance the top shops have published their lists of top toys for 2017, just don’t forget a pack of batteries if required, or you may be responsible for a few tears on Christmas morning.

The Teen:

If you don’t want to receive the classic eye-roll when your teen unwraps your gift, don’t even pretend to guess what is cool. Best to leave it to them, give them a voucher for H&M, New Look or Outfit so they can shop up a storm with their friends and choose some cool insta-ready threads. Just don’t raise an eyebrow when they show you what they bought, your opinions are SO last decade.

The Pet:

The fluffiest member of the family needn’t be left out of the present giving.  Pet gifts are amongst the cutest and there’s loads to choose from at Pets at Home. From Brussel Sprout and Gingerbread shaped chew toys, xmas dog jumpers, and other stocking fillers, to Santa-shaped hamster beds and chewing garlands for the tiniest of pets. We’re sure that they’ll thank you in their own way, let’s just hope it’s not with a ‘present’ of their own on the carpet…

The hard-working present buyer (YOU!):

If all this amazingly well thought-through present buying has left you feeling a little drained, then a trip to Costa, Cafe Nero or Starbucks for a cuppa is very necessary and very well deserved, you could even have a mince pie or two!
