Improving biodiversity

In 2009, Fort Kinnaird Retail Park approached ELGT for advice on improving biodiversity around the shopping centre by involving the local community, particularly families and children. This resulted in a small bu successful biodiversity enrichment project being delivered at the end of last year.

ELGT has recently completed the second stage of this exciting project to improve bidoversity in the grounds of the popular shopping centre.

This phase saw the Trust and volunteers create a strip of wildflower 'meadow' by planting nectar rich Scottish wildflower species that appeal to birds, bees, butterflies and other bugs. ELGT Project staff were once again joined by the employees from Fort Kinnaird along with children from the nearby Newcraighall Primary School.

This project was part of a series of activities to mark the International Year of Biodiversity 2010, and also linked in with wider Biodiversity projects being delivered by the Trust and other organisations this year, promoting habitats for the declining bee population.

The day was a great success and as well as the meadow creation, the children also made their own bee homes to take away. Bee fact information sheets and seed packets were given out at the end of the day and everyone had a lot of fun getting active scattering the seeds and raking the soil!
